Wonderla Chennai Park to be its biggest

The upcoming Wonderla theme park in Chennai will span 62 acres, solidifying its position as the company’s fourth park in India. This addition complements the Wonderla parks in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kochi. Notably, the Bengaluru park is seamlessly integrated with a resort, offering visitors a complete and immersive entertainment experience.

Situated at a convenient distance of roughly 45 kilometers from Chennai, the Wonderla theme park will be strategically located along the scenic Old Mahabalipuram Road. This captivating destination will be nestled in the picturesque village of Illalur, a mere two kilometers away from the OMR highway. The ambitious project is anticipated to require an investment of approximately Rs. 490 crores and is slated for development in the Thiruporur taluk of the Chengalpet district.

Wonderla believes its upcoming Chennai property will compete with its current best-performing park in Bengaluru due to larger and more thrilling rides.

Investment in the Chennai park, which is set to open in the second quarter of FY26, has increased due to the addition of larger rides.

“We spent Rs 150-160 crore on the Chennai project, and the final cost has been revised to Rs 515 crore. Previously, it was Rs 490 crore, but due to changes in the park and the types of attractions being added, it has gone slightly over budget. We will have India’s largest roller coaster, which is similar to attractions found at Disney and Universal Parks. The ride will cost between Rs 70 and 80 crore, according to Arun Chittilappilly, Wonderla’s Managing Director (MD).

He expects the Chennai park to compete closely with the Bengaluru property, which had 12.7 lakh footfalls and a revenue of Rs 196.5 crore in FY24, up from Rs 169.8 crore in FY23.

“Chennai can be as large as Bengaluru. I believe it has the potential to be our largest park, competing with Bengaluru for the most visitors. They (Tamil Nadu) had been requesting a park from Wonderla for the past 20 years, so it was about time we delivered,” the MD stated.
