Construction of an elevated corridor between Vandalur and Kattankulathur to improve traffic near the Kalaignar Centenary bus terminus in Kilambakkam will begin this year.
According to a press release, the National Highways Authority of India has begun work on developing a detailed project report for the elevated corridor. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority will redesign the road opposite the Kalaignar Centenary bus terminus to make it easier for buses to enter from Chengalpattu. Currently, buses from Chengalpattu make a U-turn at the Vandalur signal to reach the terminus.
Once the elevated corridor is constructed, buses will stop taking a circuitous route through Iyanancherry. Construction of pedestrian facilities will begin once the model code is lifted. Once the work is completed, pedestrians will be able to cross the GST road opposite the bus stop.
Government and private buses heading to Chennai will not be permitted to stop opposite the terminus. Action has been taken to reduce congestion in the area.
At the intersection, police are stationed to assist people in crossing GST Road. Near the terminus, construction has begun on a zebra crossing and other pedestrian amenities. Every day, the terminus is home to up to 1,100 government buses, 600 MTC buses, and 500 Omni buses. Every day, up to 60,000 passengers pass through the station; on weekends, that figure rises to 80,000. According to the press release, CMDA will finish its efforts to reduce local traffic.
